What does Botox® do?

BOTOX® reduces the facial lines and wrinkles that we get as a result of ageing, but it is also great at preventing the deepening of lines!

We get more lines with ageing due to a combination of:

  • Our muscle action - contraction when we laugh, cry, talk or frown
  • Our skin's reduced elasticity
  • Alcohol consumption
  • Hormonal influences
  • Smoking
  • Sun damage
  • Gravity

What is BOTOX®?

BOTOX® is a highly refined substance produced by bacteria. It is diluted and injected into the facial muscle areas and works by relaxing the muscles of the skin that are causing the contractions.

This gives the face a more relaxed and youthful appearance, the wrinkles becoming smoother or disappearing altogether, whilst the overall result is still very natural.

Botox is not botulism. Botulism food poisoning is caused by massive amounts of botulism bacteria creating massive amounts of toxin. Xotox or Botulinum Toxin A is used in very diluted amounts in opthalmology, neurology and cosmetics cases worldwide. In our treatments we use miniscule amounts of the chemical secreted bt the botulism bacteria. There is nothing alive in the Botox injection.

Here are examples of areas that can be treated with BOTOX®:

  • Horizontal forehead lines
  • Between the eyebrows (frown lines)
  • Crow's-feet around the eyes
  • Nose ("bunny lines")
  • And many other areas which we can discuss with you

How long does the treatment take?

Around 15 - 20 minutes and you will see the results within 48 - 72 hours.

Often a single visit is enough to create a great result. The first results start showing after about 4 daysthough it takes up to 2 weeks for the effects to come through fully. After that time, your practitioner will review your progress and discuss top-ups with you.

Does it look artificial?

The effect looks very natural because we target only specific facial muscles. The untreated muscles are unaffected and you will still have facial expressions. We still want people to be able to have facial expressions to make it look natural.

Will it leave my face numb?

No, there is no change in your skin sensation.

Will I be able to move my face afterwards?

Certainly! Just not as much (or you would get the wrinkles again). Extreme movement of the muscles that caused the wrinkles will have been prevented but other normal facial muscles will not be affected.

How long does the effect last?

The effect generally lasts for 3 - 4 months, after which re-treatment is required. If you maintain your re-treatments, the interval between treatments gets longer and can eventually extend up to a year.

Is it uncomfortable to have BOTOX®?

You do not even need to be numbed for the treatment, because the amounts used are so small. You may have a very small amount of discomfort for a few seconds. Speak to our team members and they can tell you about their own experiences.

Are there any side effects?

There is a small risk of localised bruising, slight swelling and redness at the site of injection. Such side effects disappear very quickly and respond well to cool packs. Even rarer are side effects such as drooping eyelids, which will resolve themselves untreated.

Botox® has an excellent safety record and as soon as your treatment is over you can resume normal daily activities, though we would recommend not to exercise for the remaining time of that day andnot to rub the area concerned to avoid tracking. We also recommend not to drink alcohol until the next day because this could reduce the effectiveness of your treatment.

What if I really don't like the results?

That would be very unusual, but if it was so the remember that the effects are completely reversibleand temporary. With a bit of patience you can have all your old wrinkles back.

Who can have BOTOX®?

It works equally well on women and men. BOTOX® is not recommended if you are pregnant, breast-feeding, have a neurological disorder or a known hypersensitivity to BOTOX®. We also don't recommend it when you are taking Aspirin and other NSAIDS (non-steroid anti-inflammatory drugs), vitamin E, Ginkgo Biloba or St. John's Wort.
BOTOX® and dermal fillers are often used in conjunction to supplement each other, giving an enhanced effect in reducing wrinkles and producing a more youthful appearance.

Should you consider Dermal Filler instead?

Consider Dermal Filler when:

  • You have lost volume of the skin or lips.
  • You have lines at rest
  • You want to give your lips more definition
